The Gathering: Matthew 9:1-8

1Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."

3At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"

4Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." 7And the man got up and went home. 8When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men. (Matthew 9:1-8)

We had a small group tonight but it was a very interesting time I must say.  We started off as usual with some snacking and hanging out and then we gathered in the meeting room to worship.

Afterwards we had a close time of communion and then we hung out a bit more.  Kevin led the discussion and he gathered us back together in the meeting room to begin saying something like, "We are going to keep it short tonight," and "we don't have a whole lot to talk about tonight."

I could tell that we were in for the long haul.  Our discussion really focused on some very controversial and timely subjects ranging from the Kingdom of God, the power of forgiveness given to all men and women, does healing really happen?  Why? Is there more to healing than just the physical components.

Needless to say there are a range of opinions in our group on this subject and we ended up going over.  At around 7:20 we adjourned, but I get the sense that we will continue to broach these subjecdts as we move along in Matthew.

So all in all it was a great time, even though it was a small group tonight.

FNB's New Apartment
FoodNotBombs moved!  So they are no longer at that little apartment on Washington.  They are in an apartment off of Madison Place.

So, I took the opportunity to take some video of the new place.  I didn't notice until after filming just how sweaty and nasty I had become after climbing three flights of stairs to the new place a few times, so bear with the gritty look.

Anyway, you will see Charlie and Ashley and Abe and Brandon as well as myself in the video.  These folks do this thing every week and they do such a great job with it.  I am proud of our young folks in this country that don't just "talk" about doing good stuff, but actually do it.  The older gentleman in the video is Orrest, and I met him that night.  He is a neat guy that also contributes a Monday a week at least.

FNB, in case you did not know gathers produce from grocery stores in the area each week, brings it to Ashley's kitchen and prepares vegetarian meals for the homeless and hungry and then serves them in a small park where Central Ave and Washington Ave come together.  We feed at least 30 people every Monday.

The Great Inversion -- Sunday Gathering
So tonight we had an awesome little gathering.  I say little because a strange dynamic emerged this evening.  All of our regular women members were either busy, sick, hurt or exhausted and did not come.

I do mean ALL of them.  If it weren't for the fact that we had a couple of visitiors, one of which was a very friendly beautiful woman, we would have been able to do some sort of men's accountability group, or men's ministry meeting.

It was silly.  However, our visitor contributed greatly to our discussion and prayer times.

That being said we had a really nice time.  It started with some good fruit, veggies and cheese snacking and hanging out.  Then we participated in some musical worship, a good time of sharing and praying together, communion, and more hanging out.

The discussion opened with a song by The Cobalt Season called The Great Inversion.  I have a copy of the song recorded at my friends church, The REFINERY in Baytown, Texas.

Listen to the song by clicking here.  Below are the Lyrics:

Come, my child, away
Come away where we can be
Come, my child, away
Come away, away with me

Don't you know it?
Child, I hear you when you call
All your groaning and moaning, postponing the owning of everything
Wondering, is this all?

But that was not the plan
Or I should say, it's not the dream
Greedy privatization, big fat corporations, some one Christian nation
How'd they think that's what I mean?

Come, my child, away
Come away where we can be
Come, my child, away
Come away, come and see

They said eye for eye
But I tell you cheek by cheek
They said hustle and work to be comfortable, powerful
I say blessed are the meek

But twist and turn my words
And you could wage war on half the earth
You could kill all the others, the sisters and brothers, fathers and mothers
Mark them by place of birth

Come, my child, away
Come away where we can be
Come, my child, away
Come away and now be free

Don't waste your life away
Waitin' on that brighter day
You really are the one
To bring the healing that's begun... 'cause it's begun

And it's all in love I say
Don't opt for a diff'rent way
Stop swallowin' their cliché
As if it's the only way, it's overplayed

And everyone's overpaid
But feel like we can't get away
A new car won't save the day
It's not the way

I said you would be free
And I mean free indeed
Free from that white, middle-class American Dream
Free from loneliness, free from greed

Just pick up and follow me
To Kingdom Come
A place where we all will run
A new life that has begun
Right now it has begun

After listening to the song we digested the lyrics together and had a really good time doing it.  We decided to continue talking about this next week.  Hope to see you there.

Colorful Sidewalks
We had another fun gathering that involved good worship, community communion, fruit, vegetables, cheese and crackers and chicken pot stickers.

Our discussion continued to focus on sharing our faith.  We started by watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFBZ_uAbxS0

We then drew parelells between Tom Cruise's Scientology presentation and the way that some Christian's share their faith.

Some of those similarities were:

Tom seems to be speaking another language that only people in scientology would understand.

Tom is passionate about what he is saying but no one seems to know what it is he is saying.

Tom seems to speak from a place of arrogance, as if Scientologists are the only folks that know the truth and the rest of us need to be "taught."

We decided collectively that the best way to share our faith with people is to avoid these types of snares and really just get to know and befriend people for the sake of friendship and relationship.

This IS in a sense, "sharing our faith" with folks.  It is only through being involved in other's lives that we are able to truly share the most important things we know, feel and have experienced.
After our discussion we celebrated Curtis K's birthday and as we left the gathering we noticed that the children had been busy while we met.

Each stone on our front path was decorated with a smiley face or a custom piece of chalk art.  Check out the pictures by clicking here.

Happy Birthday Silas! Three Years Old!
We had a great time tonight at our gathering.  We enjoyed some musical worship lead by Curtis.  A Communion time was led by Curtis B. and the discussion was led by John.

The subject matter tonight was "Sharing the Faith."  We only touched the surface tonight and look forward to next week's discussion on the subject.  You are welcome to join us next week (details on the right of this post)

Afterwards we all gathered together and sang happy birthday to our fellow friend and worshipper Silas, who turned 3 years old.

I thought I was taking a really good video of the birthday song time, but as it turns out my camera was not recording the entire time.  I was so disapointed!  Instead my son James was able to snap just a couple of pictures of the event.  So we have just this one picture and another one off to the right if you click on Silas' Birthday.

Happy Birthday Dear The DISTILLERY Church

…Happy Birthday to you.  AND MANY MORE....

Yes, that’s right we celebrated our first year at the DISTILLERY tonight.  It has been an awesome year at that.  No, we did not have a cake, or candles for all of us to blow out.  The church did not get any presents.  But, we did get to get together and do our Sunday thing.

It was great as usual.  I made pot stickers and I have to say that they were delicious.  They went fast though.  Tammy chopped up some fruit and some veggies and we all got to eat and hang out a bit.  Martin was in a story-telling mode and led us in musical worship with a narrative feel to it.

Our discussion focused on the idea of Hell.  It was called “For the Hell of it.”  We took some of the most often quoted scriptures about Hell used by Christians while witnessing and sharing their faith to show that this is apparently where you go if you die without having Jesus “in your heart” and we read them all in context.

Through discussion and analysis, we did not find these scriptures to be helpful in describing eternal punishment for non-believers.  We found that they either guaranteed punishment for people who were persecuting Christians, people who claimed to know God but did nothing for the poor, the hungry, the homeless and imprisoned, and other religious folks who weren’t pulling their weight in the Kingdom.

We found no hard evidence in scripture that the non-believer gets eternal punishment as a result of his/her non-belief.  We decided that there is enough Good News in the Bible to share with folks that we need not focus on the mystery of Hell when sharing our faith with them.

Next week we will talk about exactly that.  What is the Good News?  Why is it Good News?  How do we share it with others?  Where does discipleship fit in?  And other questions along those lines.  Maybe we will see some of you there next week.
