Likeness of Jesus
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)
When Jesus came to the world over 2000 years ago he left a lasting impression on us to say the least. Many people who gathered around him back then continued to talk about him and write about him. We have some of those writings, and frankly they are enough for us to get somewhat of a picture of how it all went down so long ago. As Jesus followers, we are interested in how he lived his life, how he approached things like politics, religion, poverty, war, love, grace, friendship.
We also want to discover through relationship to him and others, how we might respond to the structures, and people in our lives that demand a response. By following Jesus, we mean learning to be just like him. So when we talk about growing into the likeness of him, it’s about learning to walk all over again, but in a different kind of way.
Our relationship to him must then inform every aspect of our lives. This is more than putting a goofy looking WWJD bumper sticker on our car so we can let everyone know how religious we are. It’s about participation in the Kingdom of God via submission and partnership with our Lord Jesus.
How does this look?
It’s no big secret that we are followers of Jesus.
Our gatherings are focused on learning more about him and this daily life with him.
As Christians, we don’t ignore the traditions of our long history on earth, but we examine and look for the good, true and perfect, leaving behind the things that smack of power, money, or world domination.
Jesus, is our primary role model.
