I agree - abundant life measured in things and "feelings" distorts the whole power of John 10:10. This life coupled with His promise of enough grace, power and certainly love does indeed make this life abundant!

I also liked your definition of abundant as over sufficient; in those lean times where His sufficiency is what we cling too, it is nice to know that our whole life still basks in God's abundance.

Moving post Kevin. Thanks for posting and for bringing this subject to our discussion Sunday. I am glad that we have a community of folks that are willing to admit that life sucks sometimes. For me, the abundant life Jesus is talking about is not so much about circumstantial abundance as it is contextual abundance.

What I mean by that is that Jesus is not saying, "Everything is going to be great from now on," or "God will make you rich!' He is really saying that "a choice for me" is a choice for "life." "A decision to follow me unto earthly death, is a decision for longterm abundant life."

I imagine my life without God, and can easily get in touch with that kind of life because there was a time when I was into everything but following Jesus, and it was a miserable existence at best for me.

But now? 28 years into following him? Oh yeah, its hard sometimes and other times damn near impossible. But underneath all of that is this sense of goodness, fullness, rightness (?).

One of the definitions I have found on the word "<a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/abundant" rel="nofollow">abundant</a>" is "oversufficient." When compared to God's grace being "sufficient," it makes a little more sense in that context, does it not? Thanks again for the good post on this subject.

Jen! Thanks so much for your gracious comments. I wanted to make sure and reiterate that my post here on the evils of Suburbia are not about living in the Suburbs as much as they are about the mindset that we get lulled into there. I must agree with you that I know several people that are doing it right in the burbs.

I just wanted to post on my own adventures and what I have learned. Likewise, I love America. The song is about damning this American Empire, which again is the mindset that we must own everything and build our own little Kingdoms and that must work and work and work to have the best of everything etc.

Jesus was not about owning a bigger house and having a second or third car, he was about giving what he had and serving others. It's the opposite of the American Empire/dream. So for those that are not living that lifestyle in the suburbs but are instead about other people I commend them. I suspect that includes you. Because I have always known you to be a giving person and a follower of Jesus.

Also I agree that we all need community and love and support regardless of where we live. Again, this ws more about the mindset of suburbanism than about where you live. :)
